In a recent meeting with the evangelical community, Pastor Guillermo Trujillo Álvarez, representative of the Council of Evangelical Pastors of Mexico City, called on the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, to focus on transparency and accountability. The meeting took place amid the nation's growing distrust towards government institutions and increasing demand for a change in the way the country is governed.
Many Mexican conservative leaders described Sheinbaum's inauguration ceremony, held on October 1, as “disconcerting”. The event, which began in the Chamber of Deputies and culminated with a popular investiture in the capital's Zócalo, transcended the merely protocolary. It was a political act charged with pagan symbolism, where the sacred and the profane were constantly intertwined, they said.
According to NVNoticias, Trujillo Alvarez expressed that the government should recognize the evangelical community as a key partner in social development. His call reflects the desire of evangelical leaders to contribute to the welfare of society and to be an active part of the political process.
Pastor Trujillo had said last August that former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was a failure. In statements he made to the media, he pointed to the problem of insecurity as the most serious issue that the previous six-year term would leave behind, with almost two thousand people dead.
The pastor now emphasized that transparency is the basis of trust between the government and the citizenry saying, “there is still corruption at all levels of government” as he pointed out that the lack of clarity in government actions has generated a climate of distrust in the population. The evangelical community seeks for their voices to be heard and for their concerns to be taken into account in decision making, he said.
Trujillo Álvarez also stressed that the participation of evangelicals in political life not only seeks to influence public policies, but also to promote values that strengthen social cohesion. “We want to contribute to the development of our country and the construction of a more just and equitable society,” he concluded.
